Conference | Between Memory and the Future: A Dialogue Between a Trans Historian and a Trans Journalist

Shedding light on the blind spots of trans history in Quebec to better inform current policies, in conversation with a historian and a journalist, both of whom are trans. We will highlight journalistic, historical, and community-based tools and methods to shed light on the past, enabling us to better reflect on the present. We will discuss the policies that have contributed to the absence of trans voices in 2ELGBTQI+ history and the means now at our disposal to better make sense of it, both outside and within institutions. The historian’s perspective is primarily rooted in the past, while the journalist’s is grounded in the present, allowing us to envision the future.

Ophélie Dénommée-Marchand is a freelance journalist specializing in investigative reporting and fact-checking. She is also an encyclopedia editor for the Canadian Encyclopedia.

Aurélie Chouinard
Aurélie Chouinard is a master’s student in history at Laval University and a committed transfeminist poet. She balances the task of fairly chronicling the historical legacy of transfeminine people in Quebec with writing about the everyday experiences of her community. She writes for her sisters—and, by accident, for others as well.
