Kama La Mackerel
Kama La Mackerel is a multilingual writer, visual artist, performer, educator, literary translator, and ritualist. Her work and life are rooted in a deep commitment to love, justice, and both individual and collective liberation. Informed by research on insularity, oceanic memory, trans poetics, creolity, and decolonial ecologies, her interdisciplinary practice disrupts and reconfigures dominant aesthetics to create decolonial and queer/trans vocabularies where they have historically been erased or silenced.
By inhabiting interstitial spaces — between languages, disciplines, territories, and bodies — her work transforms these in-between zones into fertile grounds for solidarity, resistance, and affirmation for marginalized voices and presences.
Her work has been presented in galleries, theatres, cultural venues, and universities across Canada and internationally. She is the author of two books: Indrazaal and the Quest for the Ocean (Éditions KATA, 2023) and ZOM-FAM (Metonymy Press, 2020). Originally from Mauritius, Kama lived in India before settling in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal in 2012.
